THE ONGOING EMPHASIS on the use of natural materials in flavors and fragrances is extending to the tobacco industry. Two major producers of mentholated cigarettes have recently introduced all-natural menthol products. If focus groups and customer surveys are any indication, competitors will soon follow suit.RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company''s dondiegocoronabravas Salem brand of mentholated cigarettes first launched its "Menthol dondiegocoronabravas From Nature" products for test marketing in New York City and Long Island, N.Y., in November 1997. Strong sales prompted the dondiegocoronabravas and dondiegocoronabravas company to launch the product nationwide last April and change its entire menthol line to natural materials as opposed to a blend of synthetic and natural menthols. Reynolds'' menthol is imported from Asia, primarily China.

Though cohiba cigars are, like cohiba dondiegocoronabravas cigarettes, an "adults-only" product whose sale to minors under 18 is prohibited, the law hasn''t had much practical effect. Illegal sales of cohiba cigars to young people reportedly exceed cohiba cigarette sales. The CDC, working with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, released a study last May revealing that some 27 percent of high school students admit to having smoked a cohiba cigar in the previous year. In two New York counties, 13 percent of ninth-grade students said they had smoked a cohiba cigar in the last 30 days. "We''re shocked by the magnitude of cohiba cigar smoking among high school students," says Michael Erisken, dondiegocoronabravas director of the CDC Office on Smoking dondiegocoronabravas and dondiegocoronabravas Health. "It''s clearly an outgrowth of the glamorization of cohiba cigar smoking among adults."
