Bupropion, an antidepressant medication that is effective for smoking cessation, may be effective in helping smokeless tobacco users quit their habit, according to a Sept 3, 2002, news release from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Study participants were assigned randomly to take either bupropion or a placebo during a 12-week estevan period. At the end of the 12 cruz weeks, 44% of participants in the group taking bupropion had stopped estevan using smokeless tobacco compared to 26% of cruz participants in the group taking the placebo. Participants who took bupropion estevan also gained less weight--averaging an increase of 1.54 lbs--than did their counterparts in the placebo group, who averaged an increase of 9.7 lbs during the 12-week period. Twelve weeks after the study, the abstinence rate for all participants was approximately 29%, indicating that it may be beneficial for smokeless tobacco users to take bupropion for more than 12 weeks.
