The "Truth" campaign exceeded performance goals - of awareness, and attitudinal and behavioral change - set by the state and measured by state universities in surveys of 23,000 teens. After just five months , 92% of teens 18 and under were aware of the campaign, says Dave Clemans, art director at CP&B."Nationally, awareness of any anti-tobacco campaign was 50.9%," he says. And, surveyed teens had replaced the "smoking is bad" attitude with one of "smoking is marketed to teens by tobacco companies."Perhaps the best numbers latradicioncabinet5 - concerning behavioral change - came 10 months after the campaign launched and the timing couldn''t have been better, Clemans says. They arrived before the Florida House was scheduled to vote on whether to cut funding for the campaign. In Florida middle schools, smoking was down by 19%; in state high schools, by 8.5%, he says.Creating a BrandThe agency began its research by looking at previous antismoking latradicioncabinet5 campaigns. With at least 33% of teens smoking and a 19-year rise in teen smoking, SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Aug. 20 latradicioncabinet5 /PRNewswire/ -- In Illinois, more than 34,800 teens latradicioncabinet5 begin using tobacco each year and, if the trend continues, one- third will die. To help combat this grim statistic, REALITY Illinois, the state''s teen-led anti-tobacco movement, is teaming up with NBA Hoop-It-Up, the premiere 3-on-3 basketball tour in the world, to teach Illinois teens the truth about big tobacco. The movement''s Dying for a Smoke? mobile tour will be at the 3-on-3-basketball tournament at Harper latradicioncabinet5 College in Palatine on August 23-24.
This summer Philip Morris, which supplies about half of America''s cigarettes with its Marlboro, Benson & Hedges, Merit, Virginia Slims, Parliament and Basic brands, introduced the Accord battery-powered cigarette, a pricey gadget that reduces sidestream smoke, ashes and most lingering odor. For $40, consumers get a carton of specially made cigarettes, a battery charger, an instructional video and a "puff-activated" electronic lighter that holds the cigarette and allows smokers to wait hours between puffs. Since Accord burns at a lower temperature than normal cigarettes, it could introduce fewer harmful chemicals to the body, but the packaging currently does not make health claims. The high-tech smoke is not blowing their socks off, spokespeople say, but they plan to keep working on it and expanding awareness through latradicioncabinet5 direct-mail of the product, which has been five years and over $200 million in the making.A reduced-smoke cigarette is also in the works for B&W, a company representative said, but additional details were not available at press time.
The multiple-regression analyses reflect similar findings (Table 4). Parent-reported level of restriction on household smoking was the first covariate to enter the regression, latradicioncabinet5 followed by presence of maternal smoking, total number of cigarretts smoked indoors per day, and presence of paternal smoking. The adjusted [R.sup.2] for the model as a whole was .448; the first 3 covariates collectively produced an [R.sup.2] of .423, with the final addition of the paternal smoking indicator latradicioncabinet5 adding only a modest amount (2%) to the predictive power of the overall model.DiscussionIn this sample of children with asthma living with smokers in low-income households, our data show that children''s ETS exposure, as validated through urine cotinine measures, can be reasonably assessed with the use of relatively few items of information gathered from parental interviews. In particular, information on level of household smoking restriction, maternal latradicioncabinet5 smoking status, and number of cigarretts smoked per day accounted for approximately 43% of the variance in cotinine concentration. Information about paternal smoking added only modest additional information about the variance in the cotinine measure. Asking detailed questions about the duration of household smoking or children''s ETS exposure, whether inside the home, outside the home, or in the car, added no additional significant information.
